An interesting weight of 1 nomisma made from a 500 year old coin
Lot 1415
Byzantine Weights, Circa 5-6th century. Weight of 1 Nomisma (Bronze, 14x16 mm, 4.53 g), a square coin weight for a solidus made from an issue of Amyntas, King of Galatia (39-25 BC). [Head of Herakles to right, club over left shoulder.]. Rev. Lion standing right; above, B; below, monogram of AMYNTOY. RPC I 3505. SNG Paris 2377-2382. Attractive earthen deposits. The obverse intentionally smoothed down and the edges beveled, otherwise, very fine.

What makes this solidus weight especially interesting is that it was made from a coin which was, at that time, already half a millenia old!
